General Acquisition of Turkish Citizenship
Article 11 of the Citizenship Law No. 5901.in accordance with the article, foreigners who have been residing in our country for 5 years without interruption can obtain Turkish Citizenship in the general way if the following conditions are met. The acquisition of Turkish citizenship is taken in two ways: by birth and subsequently by the decision of the competent administration. According to the general provisions later, foreigners who want to acquire Turkish citizenship must meet the following requirements.
A foreigner must be a minor in accordance with national law, if he is stateless, T.C. According to the Civil Code, he must be a minor;
He must have resided in Turkey for at least 5 years from the date of applying for citizenship;
A foreigner must indicate his desire to settle in Turkey. For example, acquiring real estate in Turkey, T.C. to marry a citizen, a Turkish citizen must take actions such as mother, father, having children;
He should not have a disease that would pose a threat to public health;
He should not be the one who demonstrates behavior in accordance with public morality;
In order to take part in the Turkish society, he must be able to speak Turkish;
He must have a profession and an income that can provide a livelihood for himself and his dependents in Turkey;
The country should not have a situation that poses a threat to its security and public order.
Actions to be Taken by the Applicant for Turkish Citizenship
The application for Turkish citizenship is made by the applicant himself or by his deputy with a special power of attorney issued to the governorate where the settlement is located. In cases where the applicant is under the age of 18 and(or) lacks the ability to distinguish, the application can be made by the parent or guardian.
A foreigner’s application for citizenship is processed on the basis of a Foreign Identification Number of the Republic of Turkey.
The application is made by filling out the application form and submitting the documents listed below. As the date of application, the date of receipt of the person’s form petition as a document record is taken as a basis.
A foreigner who wants to obtain Turkish citizenship can be located abroad for a total of not more than 12 months during the required period of residence in accordance with the new legal regulation. If the total amount of time spent abroad does not exceed 12 months, it is assessed within the prescribed period of residence.
Required Documents for Obtaining Turkish Citizenship
Turkish Citizenship Application Form;
biometric photo with white background in 50×60 mm format;
A passport or similar document that is valid in its place;
A birth certificate with identification information or a similar document with this information;
A document containing a person’s marital status. Such as a marriage certificate, a divorce decision, a death certificate.
A medical report of the qualifications determined by the Ministry of Health on the absence of a person’s infectious and non-hazardous disease from the point of view of public health;
A document indicating that he has a profession and income that can provide for the livelihood of himself and his dependents in Turkey (work permit, tax plate, etc.);
A document indicating the dates of entry and exit to Turkey to be obtained from the Provincial Police Department indicating that he has resided in Turkey for at least 5 years from the date of applying for citizenship;
Valid residence permit document for a sufficient period of time for the future until the citizenship application is completed;
If the applicant has a court decision that has been finalized for any criminal reason, an approved copy;
Receipt of payment of the service fee to the Teller of Finance.
Transactions Made by the Commission
The application made by the foreigner to the Governor’s Office within the borders of the province where he/she resides is sent by the Governor’s Office to the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The applicant can track the Citizenship application number by learning it from the Public Relations unit of the General Directorate of the relevant Ministry.
The necessary examination is carried out by the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the relevant person is notified whether the citizenship application result is positive or negative.
